DENTAL AWARENESS MONTH
The month of February of each year is National Dental Awareness Month. This is a period of time set aside to increase owners’ awareness of what may be going on inside their pet’s mouth. What is going on is often unseen and is usually quite bad.
When I first began practicing veterinary medicine in 1968, the mention of cleaning a dog’s or cat’s teeth was usually perceived as a joke or as a money grab. Many people still believe the same. However, those pet owners that have kept pace with the times and realize that their pet’s expected life span has been extended by many years compared to the life span expected in 1968 know that dental disease is the Number 1 health problem in pets. It is more common than any other infectious disease or arthritis or heartworms.
